The shipwreck of the destroyer Orion

orion-shipwreckOn August 22, 1943, after sabotage in the port of Piraeus, the “Orion” sank. She was then raised, refitted and continued to operate now under the command of the German Navy.

But his luck was not to continue for much longer. In September 1944, an Australian Air Force aircraft that had taken off from Benghazi airfield, on a scheduled reconnaissance flight over the Aegean, spotted the ship at Kedros, Donoussa, Cyclades.

At the same time, four other aircraft took off and began to attack the ship, which was completely destroyed.
The wreck of the ship remained wrecked in Kedros until the early 1950s, when it was broken up and sold by the Wreck Salvage Organization (O.A.N.).

To this day, at the bottom of the bay and at a depth of 5-6 meters, there are still the wreckage from the ship’s boat which, when the weather is good, is visible. The story of the Orion is brought to life today as a final tribute to those who sacrificed themselves for freedom.
