Best beaches in Thassos

Thassos is blessed with a plentiful supply of good beaches all around its circular coastline. There are seemingly endless stretches of golden sand with all manner of tourist facilities and quiet coves where you can escape the package holiday hordes.

The incredibly beautiful bay of Makryammos lies a couple of kilometres south east of the capital, Limenas. The startling white sand beach is back by lush vegetation and lapped by aquamarine water which is so clean that the beach consistently earns the European Blue Flag. The beach is dominated by the Makryammos Hotel and Bungalow Complex which is a self-contained resort offering its guests a huge range of sports and leisure activities.

One of the island’s most popular beaches, Khryssi Ammoudia, is a long golden stretch around the cape to the south of Makryammos. Buses from Limenas drop day trippers at Skala Potamia at the southern end of the beach or you can make your own way to the centre of it via the winding road leading down from the village of Panagia. The name of the beach refers to the golden sand which seems to go on forever – which is just as well because crowds of sun and sea worshippers flock here in July and August. You’ll find plenty of bars, tavernas and watersports along the seafront but if you’re seeking a secluded spot you’ve come to the wrong place.

Further south down the east coast there are a couple of good beaches just beyond Kinira. Loutrou and Paradise beaches can be reached down dirt tracks leading off the main coastal road. Paradise Beach is particularly scenic, backed by wooded cliffs and facing the islet of Kinira. It’s a tranquil spot where nude sunbathing and swimming are tolerated.

The tiny hamlet of Alyki, between twin bays at the south east corner of the island, occupies one of the most scenic coastal settings in the whole of Thassos. The sand and pebble western cove can get a bit crowded in high season so head for the other bay to escape your fellow tourists. The waters around the white marble headland are good for snorkeling.

On the south coast you’ll find a good beach at Astris and a better but more crowded beach with watersports at nearby Psili Ammos. The bustling resort of Potos is dominated by German tour groups and is awash with lively waterfront bars and cafes.

The nearest decent beach to Limenaria, the island’s second largest town, is Trypiti which stretches for 800 metres and has sun shades and beds for hire in high season. A tunnel leads through the headland at the western end of the beach to a small anchorage for boats.

The west coast is more exposed and less scenic than the south and east coasts but there are some pretty seaside villages and a handful of decent beaches in the north west corner of the island. Skala Rahoni has a wide range of watersports and an excellent camp site and there are pretty pine-fringed beaches at Vasiliou and Pahys, either side of Rahoni.

To see the whole of the coastline book yourself onto one of the round island boat trips which depart from the old harbour in Limenas several mornings each week. The trips include swimming stops and a barbecue lunch on the beach.
