Discover the beaches of Amorgos

Amorgos boasts several scattered beaches, characterized by their stunning underwater scenery, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and their diverse variety, creating a unique landscape, while some of them are unknown to most tourists. These relatively small beaches, whether sandy, pebbly, or rocky, showcase exceptional beauty and cleanliness, forming small hidden gems.

Only a few of them are organized, while most are accessible on foot, by road, or by boat. Many visitors choose to approach Amorgos’ beaches through well-maintained paths. From Chora, the island’s central town, the beaches are easily reached within a short drive..

The crystal clear waters of Amorgos prompted famous French film director Luc Besson to shoot diving scenes for his cult movie The Big Blue here. If you’re not into scuba diving at least pack your mask and snorkel so you can explore the wonderful underwater world which lies off the beautiful beaches and rocky coves dotted around the island’s 112 kilometre coastline.

The two ports of Katapola and Aegiali have town beaches protected from the fierce meltemi winds that tend to batter other sections of the coastline. Their harboursides are lined with bars, cafés and fresh fish tavernas which you won’t find on the island’s more remote beaches. Some of the prettiest beaches have no facilities at all so make sure you take food and water with you.

Caiques (water taxis) run frequently from the ports to various beaches up and down the coastline in high season and also head out to the islets of Gramvoussa, off the south west tip of Amorgos, and Nikouria which lies just off the west coast. Nikouria was once used as a leper colony but is now uninhabited. It offers some lovely beaches and is a good spot for snorkelling and fishing.

The quiet beach of Agios Panteleimon is the first stop on the caique journey from Katapola followed by beautiful but busy Maltezi where there’s a café and sun beds and shades for hire. The next beach south west along the coast is Plakes which is popular with nudists.

From the small hamlet of Kamari, south west of Katapola, there’s a path down to the beaches of Notina, Mouros and Poulpodhi (about 20 minutes walk). Mouros is particularly beautiful with calm, clear water through which you can see right down to the sea bed. There are two caves, to the right of the beach, which attract swimmers and snorkellers.

At the south western tip of the island you’ll find Kato Kambos – a stunningly beautiful and remote narrow inlet with sandy and rocky beaches and a tiny church by the water’s edge. It’s an easy walk from the village of Kolofana.

The island’s most famous beach is Agia Anna on the east coast below the extraordinary Hozoviotissis monastery. It’s a stunning setting, backed by high cliffs and overlooking crystal clear, emerald-blue waters peppered with rocky islets. Small wonder Besson chose this beach and its waters to shoot key scenes for his classic film. The beach gets fairly crowded in high season but nudism is tolerated (somewhat incongruously) in the bay directly below the monastery.

Diving lessons and excursions are available from Dive Ventures based in the northern port of Aegiali. The rich marine life of these waters is a magnet for both divers and fishermen – black fish, lobster, red snapper, sargus, mullet and octopus are among the many species to be found in abundance here.

Aegiali beach

The beach of Aegiali is the largest of the island and is located in the middle of the bay of Aegiali, right next to the center of the village and the port. It is one of the most famous beaches, where a lot of people gather, as the camping of the island is also located there.

It has a horseshoe shape, shallow waters, fine white sand, sagebrush trees for shade and is accessible to people with special needs.
Part of the beach is organized with sunbeds and umbrellas and is ideal for children, for racket lovers and for diving.

Along the beach there is a children’s playground, taverns, bars and cafes and a few minutes’ walk from the center of the village where you will find a supermarket and other facilities.
Access is by road or regular bus service. At the end of the beach begins the path that leads to the isolated beach of Levrosos.

Agia Anna Beach

Agia Anna Beach is situated on the southeastern coast of Amorgos, near the village of Katapola. Kambi beach

The beach has no shade and is popular with nudists, overlooking the rock island Megalo Biokastro and ideal for snorkeling

Kambi Beach does not have much tourist infrastructure, but you can find some taverns or cafes in the area, where you can enjoy local delicacies and cool drinks.

Liveros beach

Liveros beach is a sandy beach with deep blue waters and a relaxed atmosphere. The sandy shores and bottom of the beach offer a pleasant bathing experience.

The beach is also known for its impressive natural beauty, as it is surrounded by high cliffs and interesting geological formations you will also find the shipwreck Olympia, featured in the movie ‘The Deep Blue’. Access is by footpath.

Levrossos beach

Levrossos beach is located north of the island, very close to Aegiali. It is one of the most beautiful beaches of Amorgos, with fine sand and small pebbles, a few tamarisk trees that offer shade and a tavern above the beach.
It features a combination of sand and pebbles, along with crystal-clear turquoise waters. The beach is surrounded by rugged cliffs and offers beautiful views of the Aegean Sea.

The beach is not highly developed, which adds to its charm and natural appeal. There are a few umbrellas and sunbeds available for rent, providing some shade and comfort. However, it’s a good idea to bring your own supplies, such as water and snacks, as there are limited facilities on the beach.

It is not organized and is traditionally considered a nudist beach. Access is by road following the road to Tholaria, where the parking lot is almost a ten-minute walk along a path.

Limenari beach

Limenari beach is located north of the island, about 1 km outside Aegiali. It is a nice little beach with pebbles and sand, without shade and with few people because it is not visible from the road. Access is by road to a point and follows a small path that leads to the beach.

Maltezi beach

Maltezi Beach is a secluded and picturesque beach with pebbles and rocks. It offers a tranquil atmosphere and is surrounded by impressive cliffs and lush vegetation. The turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea make it an ideal spot for swimming and snorkeling.

To reach Maltezi Beach, you can take a car, motorcycle, or a local bus from the town of Chora or the port of Katapola. The road leading to the beach might be a bit challenging and unpaved in some parts, but the stunning views along the way make it worthwhile.

Mouros beach

The popular Mouros beach is located south of the island, following the road to Arkesini, near the villages of Vroutsi and Kamari. It is considered one of the most beautiful beaches of Amorgos, windless, with gray sand and small pebbles. The beach is narrow but many choose to sit on the large stone slabs to better enjoy their sunbathing. Along the rocks on the right side of the beach are two underwater caves that you can swim to explore. Its amazing beauty, with the rocks that jump out of the clear blue waters and the invisible rocks that create shade and small hiding places, will captivate you! Above the beach, there is a fish restaurant with fresh fish and lobsters and a fantastic view of the ocean. Access is by road to one point and follows a path of about 400 meters leading to the beach.

Nikouria beach

Nikouria beach is located on the uninhabited islet of the same name, in the northern part of Amorgos, very close to Agios Pavlos and 5 km from the port of Aegiali. There are 3 beaches with sand and fine pebbles. The two are where the boat drops you off where there is also a small canteen. The waters are calm and clear and it is a very good spot for diving and fishing. Access is by small shuttle boats from Agios Pavlos that depart every 30 minutes.

Paradisia beach

Paradisia beach is located northwest of the island, in Kato Meria near Kalofana and below the beautiful church of Agia Paraskevi, where the big festival takes place on July 26. It is a quiet beach with sand and pebbles and there is only one tree and a canteen for the basics. On its northern side there are ancient remains from the early Christian era, which when it is north are wet from the sea. Access is by road, but also by bus.

Plakes beach

Plakes beach is located north of the island, opposite Katapola and immediately after Maltezi beach. It is a hidden bay surrounded by imposing rocky cliffs and deep clear waters. The beach is sheltered from the winds and this combination makes it a good location for diving. As its name indicates, it is covered by large stone slabs and rocks, where bathers dive directly into the depths and is a pole of attraction for nudists. Because the access is difficult you can go by boats that start from Katapola beach.

Syrma beach

The pebbly beach of Syrma is located south of the island, in the area of Chora, to the right of Agia Anna with a path with stairs. The rocks there are not rough, but have turned into smooth slabs on which you can spread your towel and immediately dive into the deep.

Treis Ierarches beach

Treis Ierarches beach is located north of the island, at the end of Xilokeratidi settlement in Katapola and below the homonymous church. It is the closest of Katapola, with pebbles, hidden from the eyes of passers-by. Access is via a path through the traditional settlement of Xilokeratidi.

Tyrokomos beach

Tyrokomos beach is located north of the island, in the area of Katapolos, below Lefkes in an area with water sources and dense vegetation. It is an isolated the beach with sand and pebbles, without shade and on days when the wind blows, special care is needed because the currents can be very strong. It is next to the deserted beaches of Finikies and Agios Apostolos. Access is by boat or via a nice path from the village of Lefkes.

Finikies beach

Finikies beach located north of the island, in the area of Katapola, below Lefkes in an area with water sources and dense vegetation. It is a secluded beach with sand and pebbles and needs special care when the meltemias make their presence felt. Access is by boat or via a nice path from the village of Lefkes. It is next to the deserted Tyrokomos beach.

Chalara beach

Chalara beach is located near Sparti bay, in the area of Aigiali. It is a beautiful rocky beach, very long, combines white sand with white pebbles and is ideal for snorkelers. Access is by boat or by hiking from a difficult path that starts from the settlement of Asfontylitis and takes about 2 hours. The path offers an incredible view of the endless blue and the southeast coast of the island. Chalara is one of the best beaches of Amorgos, but due to the difficulty of the path, there are few visitors.

Chochlakas beach

Chochlakas beach is located northwest of the island, in the bay of Aegiali. It is a small beach with pebbles and sand, ideal for those who want a little crowd. Access is by boat from the port of Aegiali to Psili Ammos and then hiking through a path that takes about 10 minutes, enjoying the beautiful scenery.

Psili Ammos beach

Psili Ammos beach is located northwest of the island, in the bay of Aegiali. It is a small beach that, as its name suggests, is characterized by a sandy beach, a few tamarind trees that will offer you shade during the day. Access is by boat from the port of Aegialis or by walking via a path from the beach of Levrossos which takes about 30 minutes.
