Where to stay in Amorgos hotels and other accommodations

Amorgos offers a variety of accommodation options to suit different budgets and preferences. Though you won’t find a wealth of big luxury hotels on Amorgos but there are a few small hotels and a plentiful supply of rooms to let and pensions in the two ports of Katapola and Aegiali.

It’s advisable to book in advance if you’re visiting in high season when it’s almost impossible to find any available rooms. Domatia owners with free space normally meet the incoming ferries and you’d be sensible to take whatever’s offered if you arrive without a bed for the night in July or August.

Hotels in Katapola include the smart C-category Hotel Minoa on the square by the waterfront. It has comfortable, air-conditioned double rooms and its own taverna. If you’re looking for a quieter location try the C-class Voula Beach Hotel – a traditional blue and white Cycladic building surrounded by greenery in a peaceful spot 250 metres from the port.

Villa Katapoliani is a relatively upmarket complex of nine rooms and four studios located 50 metres from the port and 150 metres from beautiful Kato Akrotiri Beach. All the rooms and studios have private bathrooms, hair dryers, safes and balconies with views of the garden. Room and maid service is available on request. The lovely roof garden, with views of the harbour, is a perfect place to relax with a drink

Katapola’s numerous pensions include the upmarket Pension Alexandros, just 70 metres from the port and close to all local amenities including a supermarket, the bus stop and the town beach. There are five well equipped apartments with private bathroom, kitchens, air conditioning and balconies with wonderful views.

Cheaper options include Eleni Rooms at the western end of the port, Panyiotis Rooms in Xilokeratidhi along the north shore and Angeliki Rooms in Rahidhi. Or head for the camp site between Rahidhi and Xilokeratidhi (unusually for Greece it doesn’t provide a port pick-up service).

The island’s capital Hora has no hotels but there are a handful of rooms to let including Maria Economidou’s lovingly furnished and reasonably priced studios and pension Ilias and Panorama both of which have marvellous views of the valley.

The northern port of Aegiali is also well stocked with pensions, small hotels and self-catering apartments. The Lakki Village complex, which offers a variety of rooms, studios and luxury apartments, is in a prime location beside the beach. The complex is set in beautiful gardens and has its own beachfront taverna which serves up good quality Greek fare.

The island’s classiest place to bed down for the night is the luxurious Aegialis Hotel on the road up to Tholaria between the main port beach and the sandy beach of Levroso. The hotel has a beautiful flood lit sea water swimming pool, two bars, a restaurant and night club.

Budget travellers will prefer the well-equipped and shady Camping Aegialis site, just outside the port near the road to Tholaria. The 10,000 square metre site is surrounded by lovely gardens and most pitches are shaded by trees. There’s some soft ground where you’re given the option to sleep al fresco.

There are several comfortable rooms available at the hill top village of Tholaria where you’ll also find the elegant new Vigla Hotel on the outskirts of the village overlooking the ancient acropolis of the same name.

The island’s prettiest village, Langadha, has the Pagali Hotel and adjoining Nikos Taverna where you can while away the hours under vine and bougainvillea-covered terraces enjoying fresh goat meat from the grill, warm bread from the next door bakery and locally produced wine and cheese. This is the preferred destination for nature lovers, hikers, painters and photographers.
