Very little has survived by this poet, but he was considered the creator of iambic poetry. He wrote satirical poems, and had because of that many enemies.

A story tells us that when a couple did not let him marry their daughter, Archilochus wrote such a poisonous satire about the girl's father that he soon hung himself.
