Sheperd of extraordinary beauty who the moon goddess Selene fell in love with. She visited him while he was asleep and had 50 daughters by him. Eventually she put him into eternal sleep so she would have him to herself. Other versions say that he was put to sleep by Zeus, either as a means to stay young forever, or as a punishment for falling in love with Hera.
