Elias
(9th cent. BC)
Prophet of the Old Testament who is described in the first and second Book
of Kings.
He had many visions of the Lord and as his spokesman he performed many wonders,
among others reviving a dead child.
He was eventually taken to heaven in a chariot of fire, leaving only his
mantle. This episode has made many people connect him to the pagan sun god
Helios,
as well as the fact that their names in Greek resemble each other (Ilias-Ilios).
In art he is often shown in his chariot, or as a bearded man.
