The North Aegean islands, located in the northern part of the Aegean Sea, these islands are distinguished by their diverse landscapes, ranging from lush forests and mountains to pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters.
Thassos is the northernmost island in the Aegean Sea, situated close to the mainland. Renowned for its verdant scenery, Thassos is often referred to as the “Emerald Isle” due to its dense pine forests and olive groves. The island boasts a rich history, with archaeological sites such as the ancient agora, the remains of a temple dedicated to Hercules, and the ancient theater in the capital, Limenas. Thassos is also famous for its marble quarries, which have been in use since antiquity.
Samothraki, located to the northeast of Thassos, is a rugged and mountainous island dominated by Mount Saos, the highest peak in the Aegean Sea. The island is known for its natural beauty, including cascading waterfalls, thermal springs, and the striking Sanctuary of the Great Gods, an important religious site in ancient times. The sanctuary is associated with the mysterious and influential cult of the Cabeiri, and it attracted pilgrims from across the ancient world.
