What to do in Lesvos

Lesvos, the third-largest Greek island, situated in the northeastern part of the Aegean Sea, is a haven of natural beauty, rich history, and authentic Greek culture. Visitors to Lesvos can immerse themselves in a myriad of activities that showcase the island’s diverse landscapes and its profound connection to both ancient and modern traditions.

Start your journey in the charming capital of Mytilene, a town that effortlessly blends the old with the new. Wander through the narrow, winding streets of the Old Town, where traditional houses adorned with colorful flowers line the cobblestone pathways. Discover the imposing fortress of Mytilene, offering panoramic views of the town and the sea, and delve into the Archaeological Museum to explore artifacts dating back to the island’s ancient past.

Lesvos boasts a plethora of pristine beaches, each with its own unique charm. From the popular Petra Beach with its impressive rock formation to the secluded beauty of Tarti Beach, there is a shoreline to suit every preference. Spend leisurely days basking in the Mediterranean sun, swimming in crystal-clear waters, and savoring the authentic Greek cuisine served in seaside tavernas.

Nature enthusiasts will find delight in the island’s lush landscapes, particularly the Petrified Forest of Lesvos. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to fossilized trees that date back millions of years, providing a fascinating glimpse into the Earth’s prehistoric history. Embark on a journey through the forest, marveling at the ancient tree trunks and the unique geological formations that tell a tale of a bygone era.

Lesvos is synonymous with traditional Greek cuisine, and a visit to the island is incomplete without indulging in its culinary delights. Explore the local markets, such as the Lesvos Agricultural Museum and the Mytilene Municipal Market, where you can sample and purchase the island’s renowned products, including olive oil, ouzo, and various cheeses. Don’t miss the opportunity to savor authentic Lesvian dishes in seaside tavernas, where fresh seafood, locally sourced ingredients, and traditional recipes create a gastronomic experience to remember.

For those seeking cultural enrichment, Lesvos offers a plethora of cultural events and festivals throughout the year. Attend the Sardine Festival in Kalloni, celebrating the island’s maritime heritage, or immerse yourself in the Lesvos Folklore Museum in Agiasos, showcasing the island’s traditional crafts, costumes, and way of life.

To spend an unforgettable summer in Lesvos, follow our suggestions below for the best must do things   on the island. But before we get into the specifics, a tip: Make sure you take with you or even rent a car there. Lesbos belongs to the so-called “big” islands and it would be a shame not to visit it all. For the same reasons, it would be good to dedicate at least a week to it, in order to take advantage of its beauties to the fullest.

At Skala Skamnias to enjoy the sunset

After swimming in one of the island’s beaches, it is worth going for an afternoon walk to Skala Skamnias, to enjoy the sunset there. I would advise you to go up to the small picturesque church of Panagia tis Gorgona – which inspired Myrivilis to write his novel of the same name, which is built on the rock, to witness the magical moment that nature gives you in all its glory and then enjoy your ouzo at the tavern of Anemoessa, on the port.

In Molyvos for a walk in the picturesque alleys

Lesvos has many beautiful villages, however Molyvos is by far the most beautiful. Its cobbled streets, stately homes, the harbor and of course the imposing castle, make up the ideal setting for beautiful and carefree walks. When Lefteris Papadopoulos has turned Molyvos into a permanent summer destination, then something good is happening here.

Viait the castle of Molyvos

The whole area of Molyvos is beautiful, however the icing on the cake is its castle. A castle which, in addition to being an attraction, is also a separate venue for events. Throughout the summer the castle hosts concerts and shows and I recommend that you find a spectacle that suits your taste and get tickets early. Anyway the spectacle will be the reason, the real reason you should be there is the imposing atmosphere that the castle offers. This year, from August 16-19, the annual classical music festival takes place for the fourth year.

Go to the beach in Tarti for diving from the rock

The natives call it Tart, as they are in the habit of cutting off the last vowel of every word. Among them is my father. It is located near Plomari and has a wonderful sandy beach, but that is not its secret. The big weapon in Tarti is the big rock that is in its waters and is ideal for diving. Because whether you are 15 years old or 35, it is simply impossible to resist the temptation of a dive from the rock to the sea.

The impressive museum of the petrified forest is also hosted in Sigri. In the triangle of Antissa, Sigriou and Eresos, here you will learn what the phrase games of nature means.
