Beaches in Tilos

Tilos offers plenty of unspoilt and uncrowded beaches to choose from – many of which can only be reached on foot. Many visitors come here specifically to walk but if you’re more of a sun worshipper than a hiker you’ll be able to reach even the most far-flung beaches either by bus or water taxi.

The port town of Livadia has a tree-lined pebble beach sweeping round the bay. The water is crystal clear, you’ll encounter few fellow swimmers and there are plenty of waterfront tavernas where you can enjoy a leisurely lunch.

If you’re feeling energetic take the trail from the western end of the port beach and walk for about an hour to the pebble bay at Lethra. An hour’s walk south – taking the trail which starts at the Tilos Mare Hotel – takes you to Stavros Beach. Or follow the path from the cemetery and Chapel of Agios Pandelimon in Livadia to Tholos Beach on the south coast. A longer trail east along the coast from Livadia leads to the abandoned settlement of Yera and the nearby beach of Despotis.

Pebbles, clear warm waters and organization on most of the beach, you will find in Livadia, a breath away from the port. It may have sunbeds and umbrellas, but there are also many tamarisk trees to set up your umbrella or sunbathe. It is ideal for calm and relaxed swimming, while it is mainly preferred by families with small children.

The most popular beach of Tilos is the sandy Eristos, in the west of the island. One side is highly organized, while the other is suitable for nudists. You decide which way to go. Whatever you choose, don’t forget your mask, as the bottom of it is so rich and you have to discover it.

In Agios Antonios with its blue waters, palm trees and white pebbles, you will fall in love with the view and the sunset, which is considered one of the most special of our country. As you understand, you will go there for romance and emotion, so look to be there during the evening hours mainly.

If the idea of solitary bathing appeals to you, the beautiful Lethra will be there to satisfy you. A diamond coast, accessible by boat or on foot, will give you what you are looking for.

If you want to get in the boat to see the rest of the island’s beauties, Tholos, Skafis and Agios Stefanos are the beaches worth seeing. Isolated, without a trace of organization and no shade at all, they will show you waters that you did not imagine existed and a wild beauty that will drive you crazy.

Regular buses run between Livadia and Eristos Beach which is one of the best on the island – a long stretch of pink-grey sand in a sheltered bay 2.5 kilometres south of the capital, Megalo Horio. The beach has a good local taverna, the Tropicana, and the Eristos Beach Hotel is right by the seafront. There’s a nudist area at the far south end of the beach and two pretty secluded coves beyond the headland at Kavlaris.

You can also take a bus to Agios Antonios in the north of the island, a short drive west of Megalo Horio. There’s a good taverna here – the Dhelfini – which is a popular eatery among the local fishermen. At low tide you can see the petrified remains of sailors thought to have been trapped in lava from the eruption of the nearby island of Nisyros in 600 BC. These eerie beach “rocks” were discovered by the archaeologists who unearthed the fossilised bones of midget elephants which inhabited the island until their extinction in 4,500 BC.

You’ll find better swimming at remote Plaka Beach, three kilometres west of Agios Antonios. Backpackers tend to camp overnight here despite a total lack of facilities.

Livadia beach
