Best places to stay in Skopelos

Skopelos attracts thousands of holidaymakers in high season and most of the accommodations in hotels are booked up months in advance by the tour groups so it’s a good idea to check room availability before arriving on the island. If you do turn up on spec in July or August pop along to the Rooms and Apartments Association which keeps a list of available rooms.

It’s the stone building next to the town hall on the waterfront near the old quay. Room owners sometimes meet visitors off the ferries but it’s not a good idea to commit yourself to one of their rooms until you’ve seen it. You may find the standard, facilities and location turn out to be a far cry from the owner’s description.

You’ll be extremely lucky to find a room at short in one of the big hotels in Skopelos Town or in one of the resort areas unless you’re visiting in the spring or autumn. But there are dozens of rooms to rent, many offering clean and comfortable accommodation at a very reasonable price.

One of the best bets for budget travellers is the delightful Sotos Pension which occupies a wonderful location right on the waterfront in the centre of town. This renovated Skopelian house has wooden floors and ceilings, a quiet courtyard and communal kitchen. Or try Pension Andromache, another old traditional house located at the heart of the action in the town centre near the post office. The seven rooms at this welcoming small hotel are spacious and comfortable – your only problem might be the noise from passing traffic and late night revellers.

Noise won’t be a problem if you check into the upmarket Hotel Prince Stafilos, about 500 metres round the bay from the heart of Skopelos Town waterfront. This attractive B-category hotel is built in traditional Skopelian style with a grey slate roof and sits amid its own extensive and lovingly tended gardens. Facilities include a swimming pool, poolside bar and restaurant. Some of the rooms have sea views.

One of the island’s classiest hotels is the beautifully situated Adrina Beach overlooking Panormos Bay on the west coast. Guests have access to a large salt-water pool and a private beach where various watersports including jet ski-ing, water ski-ing and parasailing are available.
