Where to stay in Santorini

Santorini offers a huge variety and amount of holiday accommodation as you’d expect of an island which attracts more than a million visitors each year. If money’s no object you can spoil yourself in lap of luxury hotels located in magnificent settings. There are delightful cave houses carved into the cliffs of the Caldera and more affordable options for backpackers and low-budget travellers.

santorini-accommodationGenerally speaking Santorini is an expensive play to stay but if you book well in advance and steer clear of the all-important Caldera view you’ll be able to find reasonably priced pension-style accommodation with basic but comfortable facilities.

There are also two youth hostels on the island and three well-equipped campsites.

Many hotels and domatia owners provide a complimentary pick-up service from the port of Athinios. But if you arrive on spec without a reservation be wary of the sales pitches of the domatia owners whose accommodation might not be as attractive or ideally located as they make out. If you’re travelling in high season without a booking you’ll probably just have to take whatever’s offered and be grateful for it.

Sumptuous Villa Vedema, in the small village of Megalohori to the south of Athinios, is the island’s only deluxe class hotel. Its five-star facilities include a spa and fitness centre with massage, yoga and shiatsu rooms. Gourmet cuisine is served in a 300-year-old winery or on an open-air terrace surrounded by black volcanic rocks.

A minibus transports guests to the black sand beaches three kilometres away where private hotel facilities including sun beds, shades and bar service are provided.

One of the most luxurious places to stay in Fira, the island’s capital, is Hotel Atlantis. The hotel is in the centre of town and offers 25 rooms most of which have a private balcony with breathtaking views of the Caldera, the volcanic islets and Aegean Sea.

Hotel Loucas is one of the oldest and best hotels in Fira with terraces clinging precariously to the sides of the Caldera rim and bathrooms built into the cliff face.

Leave the cliff edge and the tantalising view and you’ll find many cheaper hotels and pensions in the back streets, especially on the road out to Santorini Camping.

santorini-hotel-calderaThe lovely village of Ia at the northern end of the island offers some top-class Caldera view accommodation in a less frantic setting than Fira. The beautiful Katikies Hotel is perched on the cliff edge and has superb facilities including two swimming pools. Newly-weds are treated to an impossibly romantic (and horribly pricey) start to married life in the gorgeous honeymoon suite.

There are plenty of self-catering apartments and villas to rent around the island. The Astra Apartments at Imerovigli are among the best, offering elegant accommodation with magnificent sea and island views. Facilities include a lovely pool with a sea view, massage service, room service.and even wedding organisation!

Backpackers head for the Fira Youth Hostel (housed in a former Catholic monastery) or the excellent hostel in Ia (a former convent). Camping Santorini, on the outskirts of Fira, has a self-service restaurant and pool and also offers bungalows for rent. There’s another campsite right on the beach at Perissa on the east coast along with a plentiful supply of reasonably priced domatia (rooms to let).

The island’s busiest beach at Kamari is lined with hotels and apartments largely geared to package holidaymakers.
