Where to stay in Samos

Samos is the most visited of all the North Eastern Aegean Islands and offers a good range of accommodation to suit both tour groups as well as independent island-hoppers. The island has luxurious hotel complexes, plenty of cheap and cheerful rooms and many self-catering studios dotted around the coastal resorts.

Book in advance if you’re planning to stay in the top resort of Pythagorio on the south coast because most hotels here are block booked months ahead by the package holiday operators.

You might struggle to find a bed in the capital Vathy if you turn up on spec in August. Hunt around in the hillside district of Katsouni, above the ferry dock, where there are plenty of reasonably priced domatia. The more central hotels near the waterfront tend to be monopolised by package holidaymakers.

The Paradise Hotel in Kanari street is a good choice among the hotels near the harbour but you’ll be lucky to get in at short notice. Despite its central location, the hotel has a lovely walled garden and pool terrace which protects guests from the hustle and bustle of the town. Drinks and Greek food are served throughout the day at the poolside bar.

One of the most charming places to stay in the capital is Pension Avli on Odos Likourgou which offers no-frills facilities in a former 18th century convent. The rooms are basic but the place oozes character and has a lovely arcaded courtyard bedecked in bougainvillea.

The busy south coast beach of Psili Ammos is flanked by hotels and studios and nearby Mykali is dominated by three large hotels devoted to package holiday groups.

Pythagorio has plenty of hotels for tour groups but next to nothing for the independent traveller arriving in high season. If there are any spare rooms going you’ll be met off the boat by the domatia owners. Otherwise you could try the tourist information booth on Logotheti, the main thoroughfare.

If money’s no object check into the luxurious Doryssa Bay holiday village on the beach to the west of Pythagorio. This top of the range self-contained complex has been built as a traditional Greek village and even has its own village square, church and Greek coffee shop.

But unlike most Greek villages it offers guests all mod cons including air conditioning, a tennis court and a beach with boating, fishing and water ski-ing. The complex of 175 rooms and 125 bungalows is served by three restaurants and there are regular Greek nights with live entertainment.

Hotels, pensions and self-catering units are available at the south coast’s other beach resorts of Ballos, Ormos Marathokambou and Votsalakia.

The pretty port of Kokkari on the north coast is fast surrendering to the package holiday industry but you can occasionally find last minute rooms to rent.

At Potami, in the north west corner of the island, freelance campers often bed down for the night along the lower reaches of the river which gives the beach its name. The main northern port of Karlovassi is not the most attractive place to stay but if you get stranded here for the night there are plenty of budget hotels and rooms available.

At the northern seaside resort of Agios Konstantinos you can ask at Ambelos Travel for details of traditional island homes to rent in the area.
