The capital of Milos, Plaka

plaka-milosPlaka is the capital of Milos and one of the most intact capitals of the Cyclades. Its name is due to the flat ground on which the houses of its first inhabitants were built, when the Castle could no longer house the entire population.

Built on an elevation 220 meters above sea level, with island color and Cycladic architecture, with cobbled picturesque alleys that were originally built to protect against pirates, with small traditional shops, restaurants and cafes and with a magnificent view of Milos Bay, Plaka composes a scene of infinite beauty that must be visited and explored. (Car traffic is prohibited.)

At the top of the hill of Plaka is the imposing Venetian “Castle” of the 13th century from which you can enjoy idyllic sunsets with wonderful colors and a panoramic view of the island’s bay, as well as the neighboring Cyclades islands.

The Dormition of the Virgin or Mesa Panagia is the church you will find at the top of the Castle, while going up and down to and from the Castle you will see another beautiful church, built on a black rock, Ypapanti tou Christos or Panagia Thalassitra. Also, don’t miss visiting the island’s metropolis, Panagia Korfiatissa, which will offer you a dreamy sunset from its marble courtyard.

Finally, in the traditional settlement of Plaka you will also find most of the public services, and the two museums that preserve the cultural heritage of the island, the archaeological and the folklore.
