Where to stay in Milos
Milos is slowly starting to wake up to tourism and you’ll find a good range of accommodation from cheap and cheerful pension-style rooms to good quality hotels with all modern conforts. There’s less tolerance of sleeping on the beach these days since the opening of a well-equipped campsite seven kilometres south of the port.
There are a number of ooms to let dotted around the island but the bulk of accommodation is in the port of Adamas where the ferries arrive. If you’re travelling in high season you’d be well-advised to book a room several weeks if not months in advance because the best places are chock-a-block in July and August. If you arrive on speculation, the Municipal Tourism Office opposite the quay will be able to give you an up to date list of domatia with rooms still available.
Most of the port accommodation is on the hill above the harbour and to the side of the road leading up to Plaka. Hotel Semiramis is one of the best middle-market options, conveniently located just 70 metres from the central square. The hotel’s best feature is its lovely garden with vine-covered pergolas where breakfast is served. There’s a complimentary mini-bus service to transfer guests from the port and airport.
Milos Camping is beautifully located at Achivadolimni halfway along the horseshoe-shaped coastline which forms the stunning natural harbour of Milos. A site bus meets visitors off the ferries and the site management can arrange car and bike rental for you. Facilities include a bar, restaurant, kitchen, laundry, play area and mini market. The site also has Cycladic-style bungalows for rent – all have private bathrooms, fridges, televisions and verandas and some have wonderful views of the bay. The 24-hour reception offers a fax service, money exchange and safe deposit boxes.
There are plenty of rooms to choose from in Plaka and Trypiti including rooms to let in the house where the famous Aphrodite of Milos statue was allegedly hidden after its discovery. Go for accommodation on the west side of the village and you’ll have superb views over the bay.
Some of the Trypiti windmills have been converted to provide unusual (and relatively pricey) holiday accommodation.
You’ll also find rooms to let elsewhere on the island – in the pretty fishing hamlet of Klima, below Trypiti, at the south coast beach resorts of Paleochori and Provatas (which has the luxurious Golden Milos holiday complex) and in the fishing village-cum resort of Pollonia in the north east corner of the island. The Kapetan Tasos self-catering studios in Pollonia are good value for money and afford great views over to the neighbouring island of Kimolos.
Portiani Hotel
The harbourside Portiani Hotel is one of the smartest places in town with double-glazing, air conditioning and minibars in all rooms. Breakfast is included in the price and is a lavish buffet affair with fresh figs, local cheeses, Greek yoghurt and honey and homemade jams.
Portiani Hotel typically offers well-furnished rooms equipped with modern amenities. The decor often incorporates Cycladic design elements, reflecting the authentic charm of the island.
Its central location in Adamas makes it a strategic point for those who want to explore different parts of Milos, given its proximity to bus stations and boat rental agencies.
Santa Maria Village
The luxury Santa Maria Village complex, one kilometre from the port, provides B-category facilities in a modern development of 26 Cycladic-style bungalows. The complex is just 250 metres from the beach and is one of the few places on the island geared to disabled visitors.
All the bungalows have a minibar and there are two sumptuous suites elegantly furnished with bed canopies. The hotel has a bar, cafe, TV lounge, safe deposit boxes and ample parking. There’s a shuttle service to and from the port where the majority of the island’s restaurants and night spots are centred.
