Vatera the tourist hub of Lesbos

vatera-lesvosThe area of Vatera is the most touristic part of the island of Lesbos. There are several hotels and rooms for rent as well as campsites that can ensure a comfortable stay. The development of Agritourism in recent years is also important.

In the restaurants and taverns of the area you will find fresh fish, local meats and pure homemade food cooked from pure local vegetables and the wonderful Mytilene oil.

The beach of Vatera, 8 km long and 10 to 30 meters wide, is beautiful with coarse quartz sand and pebbles and overgrown with tamarisk trees along its length. Due to its location – on the south side of the island – it is sheltered from the usual summer northerly winds (meltemia). The sea is crystal clear because its waters are renewed in the open ocean. At its ends, the Almyropotamos and the Vourkos river flow to the west, which are interesting wetlands.

Especially the Almyropotamos, which originates from the hot springs of Polichnitos and has water all year round, gives shelter to many turtles, water snakes, water hens and various other species of birds, which come from the neighboring wetlands of the Gulf of Kalloni. Among the advantages of Almyropotamos are the coastal roads, which allow easy exploration in great depth. The fauna of the area is also excellent and interesting, with rare species of flowers.

West of Almyropotamos begins the formation of the cape of Agios Fokas. At its edge is the picturesque fishing shelter and above it the homonymous church next to the ruins of early Christian churches, which were built with materials from the sanctuary of Dionysos. A little further on small enclosed sandy coves, where access can only be done on foot or by boat.

In Vatera you can engage in diving, enjoy the view from the top of Ai Lia, swim and visit the exhibition of the Natural History Collection and the Temple of Zoodochos Pigi.Vatera also has a small selection of taverns, cafes, and accommodations catering to tourists, though it remains a relatively quiet and unspoiled area.

The village, while peaceful, serves as a good base for exploring other parts of Lesvos due to its central location on the southern coast of the island. The nearby natural hot springs at Polichnitos and Lisvori are additional attractions for visitors to the Vatera area. The therapeutic waters of these springs have been known since ancient times and provide a relaxing experience for visitors.

The simple and laid-back lifestyle in Vatera attracts those seeking a peaceful retreat, making it a gem for travelers interested in experiencing the natural beauty and historical richness of Lesvos in a calm and relaxing environment.
