The village of Sigri in Lesbos

sygri-lesbosGifted with unique lacy coasts and bays, Sigri in Lesbos, located between two islets that stand like a fortress in the middle of the ocean. The largest is Megalonisi (or Nisiopi) with petrified tree trunks lying on its shores and a unique Lighthouse from 1860. With a strange shape and color, Kavalouros “stands” a little further.

It is a refuge for seals, while spinach grows abundantly on its rocky land. With the Treaty of Lausanne, refugees from Tenedos and the islands of Propontis settled in Sigri, mainly from Houchlia”, reports Dafni Michalea, a resident of the village, to the Athens Agency. “They started from scratch bringing only the miraculous icon of St. Trinity and few possessions. They kept it in the mosque that existed but it never worked, while it is the only one that does not face Mecca.”

With a heavy heritage, the rare geological wealth, the petrified forest and a unique Museum of Natural History “in the village stands proudly the castle built in 1757 by the admiral of the Ottoman fleet Suleiman Pasha, a Windmill, and an imposing 20-meter Lighthouse”, adds the Antonis Chiotis, who has taken over the “Kentron” cafe, which his grandfather first opened in 1958.

At the moment, a state-of-the-art oil mill is operating in Sigri, while projects such as the new port, the fishing shelter, restoration work on the castle, the design of a hotel complex perfectly in harmony with the location and the Sigri-Kalloni road are underway.
