The beach of Pigadia in Karpathos

beach-of-pigadiaThe beach of Pigadia, is one of the longest stretches of beach in Karpathos, which has been divided into several parts due to its size. As the closest beach to the capital of Karpathos, it is only a 5-15 minute walk from the town and it is easily accessible and fully developed. The most frequented part of the more than 3-kilometer-long sea bay in the northern part of the capital is Pigadia beach, which starts right next to the settlement, which is also one of the most popular beaches on Karpathos due to its easy access and the many nearby accommodations.

Pigadia beach has a built-up part with umbrellas and sunbeds for rent, as well as an undeveloped part, where, if the wind is not blowing, anyone can take down their umbrella. Most of the heath on the section of Pigadia beach is mainly covered with sand, gravel-like pebbles and stones, the depth of which can be said to be medium in relation to the beaches of the island.

Behind the beach there are also some beach bars and taverns recognized by vacationers (Island Pool Bar Restaurant, Seaside), where you can enjoy a refreshing or light lunch without having to walk to the city center. One of the island’s five-star hotels, the Alimounda Mare Hotel, rises here behind the coast, which was for a long time the only accommodation of this kind in Karpathos.

The central beach of Pigadia goes to Limanaki taverna, after which the next section is called Limniatis beach, followed by Afoti beach and then Vrontis beach. As we move away from Pigadia north along the coast, we find fewer and fewer people along the sea and the sea of umbrellas slowly disappears. A few hundred meters from the capital, in the outer parts, those who prefer less crowds and fully developed beaches can also go to the beach.

Due to the large size of the bay and the lack of a natural breakwater, larger waves can sometimes occur on the beach of Pigadia, which can be accompanied by the wind: in such cases, it is not worth sticking your own parasol in the sand, as the force of the air movement will easily pick it up.

There are separate descriptions of the beaches of Pigadia in the detailed description of the beaches of Karpathos in the current Karpathos travel guide, which highlights each local stretch of coast in detail, it is worth reading them before your vacation!
