The village of Kardamyla in Chios

kardamylaKardamyla is built on the site of ancient Kardamyla, 28 km north of Chora of Chios, and is divided into two settlements: Pano and Kato Chorio.
The local architecture characterizes the oldest Pano Xorio, while Kato Xorio or Marmaros is adorned by the beautiful mansions of old sailors and shipowners who come from the area.

In Kardamyla you will feel a traditional architecture, seeing the narrow streets, the stone alleys and the stone-built houses. In the small square is the Sailor of Kardamyla, a statue of the sculptor Aparti, while in the surrounding area you can find hotels and rooms for rent, as Kardamyla bustles with life in the summer. The taverns and restaurants in the port are waiting to offer you unforgettable hospitality.

It is worth visiting the traditional village of Pityo, which with its medieval tower, narrow streets and stone houses will take you back to other times, the churches of Agios Nikolaos Prinarites and Agios Georgios (16th century), in Pano Kardamyla, the Nautical Museum, in Káto Chorio and the ruins of the medieval settlement of Spilia.

Swimming at Nagos beach, one of the best beaches of the island, is enjoyable. You will also find beautiful beaches in Iosona where, according to tradition, Jason’s boat ran aground on his journey to Colchis and Vlychada.

In the summer, the Municipality organizes the “Kardamylia”, cultural events with concerts, theater, sports competitions, lectures and painting exhibitions. Feasts are held of Agia Marcella, on July 22, on the feast of Sotiros, on August 6, and of Panagia, on August 15.
