The area of Kampos in Chios

kamposOne of Chios’ most impressive areas, Kampos constitutes a distinctive area where the unique natural landscape harmoniously blends with the local architectural characteristics.

Just 6 kilometres south of Chios town, Kampos is widely known for its fragrant citrus groves as well as its old manor houses. The area has been declared a “historic site” and a “traditional settlement,” protected by the Ministry of Culture.

A fundamental feature of Kampos’ orchards is the tall walls made of locally quarried stone, safeguarding each property from inclement weather conditions. The aristocratic families of Chios, both Genoese and local, constructed their homes in the area from the 14th century onwards. The imposing walls encountered by visitors along the streets conceal entire microcosms, comprising elaborately adorned courtyards, grand manor houses, tree-lined lanes, and gardens abundant with flowers.

The orchards are irrigated by wells using traditional methods that were once operated by animals but have now transitioned to modern means. The houses, either two or even three stories high, aim to offer exceptional views and ensure the owners’ control over their estates.

Kampos’ distinctive local architecture leaves no visitor untouched: Lattice doors and windows, arches supported by marble columns, balconies adorned with small arches, imposing gates, pebbled courtyards, and intricately painted ceilings are some of the characteristics that bestow unparalleled uniqueness upon this settlement.

The area is perfect for walks and cycling in a wonderful environment that will impress you with the beauty of its landscape. The main characteristic of Kampos is its combination of a completely unique urban landscape with old manor houses nestled within rural estates featuring orchards and olive groves.
