The museum was inaugurated in 1980 and is housed in the old Ottoman hammam in the center of the city, a building dating from the 19th century.

The museum’s permanent collection includes works of art and antiquities covering a wide period of time, from Roman times to the Late Byzantine period and the period of Genoese and Ottoman rule on the island.
