Walking trails in Alonissos

hiking-in-AlonissosAlonissos has some excellent hiking opttions, walks most branching off from the hilly backbone which offers extensive views of both sides of the island. Walking maps are on sale in Patitiri and on nearby Skiathos. The island is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, as it has numerous trails that weave through dense pine forests, olive groves, and alongside stunning coastline.

While hiking, you’ll likely encounter a variety of plant species and wildlife. The island is known for its rich biodiversity, with more than 1200 plant species. Keep an eye out for rare orchids and the Mediterranean monk seal, one of the most endangered marine mammals worldwide.

As with any outdoor activity, ensure that you are prepared for the conditions, keep to the trails, respect the local environment, and be mindful of the local wildlife. Always let someone know where you’re going and when you’re expected to return, especially if you’re hiking alone.

If you miss the bus up to to Chora there is a 30 minutes walk on the tarmac road or a 20 minute trek on a well-marked and paved path – quicker if you are heading downhill to Patitiri.

Hiking trails

There are more than a dozen trails available on the island. They range from easy walks to more strenuous hikes. These paths take you through various terrains such as forests, farmland, beaches, and cliff tops.

Trail Difficulty and Length:

Trails vary in length and difficulty. Many are rated easy to moderate and range from 1 km to 5 km. More challenging hikes could extend up to 10 km or more. Some of the more popular trails include:

Old Village to Megalos Mourtias: This is an easy trail of about 3 km that starts from the old village and ends at Megalos Mourtias beach. The trail offers scenic views of the Aegean Sea.

Old Village to Steni Vala: This moderate trail of about 9 km starts from the old village and ends at Steni Vala, a picturesque fishing village.

Patitiri to Vithisma: A more challenging 6 km trail starting from Patitiri, the island’s main port, to Vithisma beach, offering stunning views of the coastline.

Best Time to Hike in Alonissos

The best times to hike on Alonissos are during the cooler months, from late September to early June. July and August can be very hot, and it’s recommended to avoid strenuous hikes during this period. Always remember to carry plenty of water and sun protection.
