Most of the beaches on Alonnisos are scattered along the east coast where you won’t have any trouble finding a secluded cove, especially if you hire a scooter to explore the more remote spots at the northern end of the island.
Sandy beaches are scarce – most consist of fine or rough pebbles – and organised watersports are non-existent so don’t come to Alonnisos expecting banana rides and jet ski-ing. The most popular beaches have basic tourist facilities such as sun beds and shades for hire and are served by seasonal tavernas.
You can take a bus or water taxi from the main port of Patiri to various beaches north east along the coast. Caiques also run regularly from Patiri to several beaches at the southern tip of the island.
You can swim off the rocks in Patiri if you take the path past the hotels around the promontory to the north of the town. The nearest decent beach north east of the port is Kryssia Milia which is gently shelving and ideal for children. It’s a pretty pine-fringed beach with a taverna but as it’s only two kilometres from Patiri it tends to get crowded in high season so you might prefer to walk to one of the quieter coves nearby.
Two kilometres further north is lovely Kokkinokastro where the red cliffs and red pebble beach are flanked by pine trees and crystal clear azure water. The archaeological site here has revealed remains of the ancient city of Ikos through there’s not much to see of the ruined tombs and walls which were part of the island’s former capital.
The fishing village and yacht harbour of Steni Vala has its own beach and there are several pebble beaches within easy walking distance. There’s a good beach at Kalamakia, three kilometres north of Steni Vala, and beyond it lies tranquil Agios Dimitrios which is the island’s unofficial nudist beach.
Gerakas, at the northern tip of the island 19 kilometres from Patiri, has a lonely deserted beach and is a good spot for snorkelling. You can combine your trip to the beach with a visit to the local research station run by the Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Mediterranean Monk Seal.
Another Robinson Crusoe spot is unspoilt Megali Ammos, on the west coast, reached via a dirt track leading off the main road between Patiri and Milia.
The south coast beaches include Megalos Mourtias, reached by boat or via the walking trail which leads down from Old Alonnisos. The walk down to the pebble beach takes about 45 minutes but there are several tavernas at the end of it so you can reward yourself with a cooling drink and a meal.
