Information about Amoudi in Santorini

amoudi-santorini Ammoudi is located in the closed bay of the same name on the northwest side of Santorini, below the traditional settlement of Oia, with a beautiful view of all the beaches of the island, Thirasia and the uninhabited islet of Agios Nikolaos. It is a small port, which used to be the loading point of the village’s commercial ships, which loaded wine and game land. Access is by car, donkey or by a path of 214 steps from the castle of Oia.

Ammoudi does not have a beach, but small rocks with a concrete platform that some swimmers use to jump into the water. The water is slightly warmer than in other parts of the island because it is characterized by a high sulfur concentration. It also needs a bit of attention, because it has currents and they take you without you realizing it.

The seabed is one of the most beautiful in Santorini, ideal for snorkeling and diving. In the picturesque harbor with fishing boats, there are taverns and restaurants serving fresh fish and seafood, a supermarket and some accommodation. Boats leave from Ammoudi for Thirasia and Nea Kammeni.

The chapel of Agios Nikolaos is built on the eastern slope towards the small lighthouse. It got its name from the narrow sea “passage” (Diapori) that separates it from the coast where the city of Oia is located, as Peramatari means passerby.
