Entertainment and Nightlife in Rhodes

rhodes nightlifeThe nightlife in Rhodes is characterized by a dynamic fusion of traditional Greek hospitality, modern sophistication, and a dash of island flair. From the charming cobblestone streets of the Old Town to the bustling waterfront and contemporary venues in the newer parts of the city, Rhodes offers a nightlife scene that caters to a diverse range of tastes and preferences.

For those who appreciate a leisurely evening, the Old Town of Rhodes provides a picturesque setting for strolling through narrow lanes adorned with quaint shops, cafes, and tavernas. Enjoy a relaxing dinner in a traditional Greek restaurant, savoring local delicacies and wines, while the ambiance transports you back in time.

As the night progresses, the New Town and coastal areas come alive with a more modern and energetic vibe. Numerous bars, pubs, and nightclubs offer a variety of music genres, from Greek tunes to international hits, catering to all tastes. Many venues host live performances, creating an immersive experience for music enthusiasts.

The waterfront promenades are particularly popular, providing stunning views of the moonlit sea. Visitors can find an array of stylish cocktail bars and lounges where they can unwind with a refreshing drink while soaking in the ambiance. Some establishments offer themed nights, adding an extra layer of excitement to the overall experience.

For those seeking a more energetic and dance-filled night, Rhodes boasts a lively club scene. The nightclubs pulsate with energy, featuring both local and international DJs spinning beats that keep the dance floors alive until the early morning hours.

nightlife in RhodesWhether you prefer a laid-back evening in a traditional setting, a casual drink with a view, or dancing until dawn in a vibrant club, Rhodes’ nightlife has something for everyone. The island’s nocturnal charm ensures that visitors can create unforgettable memories as they explore the diverse and dynamic facets of Rhodes after dark.

The rampant “anything goes” nightlife of frantic Faliraki, the most popular resort on Rhodes, made international headlines in the summer of 2003 sparking a major crackdown by the Greek police. The drink and drug induced excesses of young British visitors resulted in a series of much publicised bar brawls, arrests, court cases and jail sentences. Even British tour guides were arrested on the grounds that they had incited trouble by organising pub crawls and binge-drinking.

Those who abhor the British yob culture will be relieved to know that Faliraki is likely to be a far safer night time venue in future. But exponents of lager lout lunacy should be warned that the Greeks aren’t putting up with it any longer!

It’s a great pity that all the media attention has left an impression of Rhodes as a rather unpleasant dumping ground for drunken Brits. Nothing could be further from the truth. It’s safe to say that the island has one of the liveliest night scenes in the whole of Greece – but it’s rich and varied consisting of bouzouki clubs, Greek folk dance nights, many reputable dance clubs and some of the country’s finest restaurants which have found favour with royalty and international celebrities.

It’s been said that Rhodes has more bars and discos per person than New York, Paris or Berlin. The island certainly boasts a huge array of lively cafes, music bars, discos and night clubs most of which are centred in the capital, Rhodes Town, and the package holiday resort of Faliraki on the east coast.

If you find the drunken frolicking of Faliraki a total turn off head for the capital’s old quarter where you’ll find some wonderful restaurants and traditional entertainment. The classiest place in town when it comes to dining is the ultra upmarket Alexis Taverna where the chef prepares a tailor-made seafood feast for you (as long as you’ve got money to burn!). The owners use organic vegetables grown in their own greenhouse on the outskirts of town and will recommend wines from their well-stocked cellar which represents the finest vineyards in Greece. Seafood specialties include sea urchin (ouch!) and octopus carpaccio. The restaurant’s guest book reads like a hall of fame and includes Winston Churchill and Jackie Kennedy.

One of the highlights of an evening out in the medieval Old Town is the Son et Lumiere (Sound and Light) show in the grounds of the magnificent Palace of the Grand Masters. The show tells the story of the Turkish siege of the island in the 16th century. There are regular performances in English – check the notice board outside for details.

For traditional Greek dancing head for the excellent Nelly Dimoglou Dance Theatre in the Old Town behind the Turkish baths. Male and female dancers dressed in colourful embroidered costumes perform dances from all over Greece in a bid to keep the country’s time-honoured customs alive.

If you fancy trying your luck at the gambling tables, Rhodes has one of the country’s few licensed casinos – a club run by Playboy International next to Elli Beach. There are 30 tables and 300 slot machines offering you the opportunity to risk your money !
