Ikaria is an island in the Aegean Sea, between Samos and Mykonos. The name derives from the son of Daedalus, Icarus, who fell while flying and drowned in the sea. It has an area of 256 sq. km. km and a population of 8,865 inhabitants. The shape of the island is long and narrow and ends at Cape Fanari to the east and Cape Papas to the west. Most of the island is mountainous, consisting of granite rocks that cover the entire western half of the island. Disadvantaged in terms of means of transportation with few roads, but it has 2 ports, one at St Kirikos and another at Evdilos, Ikaria has an airport, with daily flights of Olympic Airways.
