Santorini offers a huge variety and amount of holiday accommodation and hotels as you’d expect of an island which attracts more than a million visitors each year. If money’s no object you can spoil yourself in lap of luxury hotels located in magnificent settings. If you’re travelling in high season without a booking you’ll probably just have to take whatever’s offered and be grateful for it.

Sumptuous Villa Vedema, in the small village of Megalohori to the south of Athinios, is the island’s only deluxe class hotel. Its five-star facilities include a spa and fitness centre with massage, yoga and shiatsu rooms. Gourmet cuisine is served in a 300-year-old winery or on an open-air terrace surrounded by black volcanic rocks. A minibus transports guests to the black sand beaches three kilometres away where private hotel facilities including sun beds, shades and bar service are provided.

Leave the cliff edge and the tantalising view and you’ll find many cheaper hotels and pensions in the back streets, especially on the road out to Santorini Camping.

The lovely village of Ia at the northern end of the island offers some top-class Caldera view accommodation in a less frantic setting than Fira. Backpackers head for the Fira Youth Hostel (housed in a former Catholic monastery) or the excellent hostel in Ia (a former convent). Camping Santorini, on the outskirts of Fira, has a self-service restaurant and pool and also offers bungalows for rent. There’s another campsite right on the beach at Perissa on the east coast along with a plentiful supply of reasonably priced domatia (rooms to let).

The island’s busiest beach at Kamari is lined with hotels and apartments largely geared to package holidaymakers.
