St. Stephen
(d.c.235)

Often called "the Deacon", St. Stephen was a protomartyr, a first martyr and one of the seven deacons. He was condemned by the Jewish council to be stoned to death for his faith, one of the judges being St. Paul.

In art he is often shown holding stones, a book or a palm branch. He is usually dressed as a deacon.
