One of the three archangels along with Gabriel and Raphael. He is also one of the seven angels who stand by the throne of God.
He is described in the Book of Daniel (10:13) and Revelations (12:7).
He is believed to protect humans against evil and is usually depicted in armour holding a sword and/or the scales of justice, sometimes killing a dragon.
In Greece he is believed to be the patron of pilots and the airforce, and on his name day the airports are celebrated and people can visit the military air bases. He is also believed to lead the souls of the dead to heaven. This has made some people associate him with the god Hermes.
Orthodox nameday: 8/11
