St. Luke
(1st century)

Greek from Antioch who was St. Paul's companion until his death. St. Luke was a physician and wrote the third gospel as well as the Acts.

According to a later tradition he was a painter and as such he became the first to paint an icon of the Virgin Mary.

There is no information, except legend, on how he died.

In art he is depicted as a doctor or bishop, sometimes standing by a winged ox or painting an icon of the Virgin Mary.
