The mother of St. John the Baptist. She is mentioned in the Gospel of Luke (1st chapter), who describes her and her husband Zacharias as a pious elderly couple without children.
The angel Gabriel appears to Zacharias and tell him they will have a son. Zacharias doubts this and is punished with dumbness until the day John is born.
When the Virgin Mary is been told she will have a child too, she visits her relative, Elizabeth, who blesses her and the child.
In art St. Elizabeth is depicted as an elderly lady who is pregnant, or holding the baby John. She is often shown greeting the Virgin Mary.
