Pythagorion is one of the most charming and tourist resorts of Samos. Pythagorion is one of the most historical places in Samos with its ruins from the Greek antiquity dating from the second millennium BC. and sites from many periods of the Greek history. It is located about 13km north of Vathy. ,

The port of Pythagorion is a main junction of the sea traffic from the nearby islands. From here, during the summer, you can take the hydrofoil to the Dodecanese islands, like Patmos, Leros, Lipsi, Kalymnos and Kos. Apart from its natural beauty, Pythagorion is famous for its Temple to Hira, the Hereon. For this reason many people come to Samos to visit this Temple. It is located 8km from Pythagorion.

Hera was worshipped in Samos from the Mycenaean times. The remains of the Temple which can be seen today was built in the 8th century BC. In the 7th and 6th centuries BC other temples were also built around the area. The tyrant Polycrates tried to rebuilt the main temple after its destruction but it was never finished. The archaeological site includes ruins of buildings around the main temple and each ruin belongs to different eras. Most interesting is a large road with statues that used to connect the temple with the town. One of these statues can be seen today in the Samos Museum. Polycrates also built a huge wall, of around 6km in length, which is also one of the attractions of the area.

A further important monument is the ancient aqueduct of Eupalinos which was constructed in the 6th century BC which used to supply water to the city and the area of Agias. In the same area there are ruins of an ancient theatre and Roman baths. Don’t miss a visit to the archaeological museum of Pythagorion.
