Perissa is lapped by the clear, blue Aegean sea and fringed with tamarisk trees. Although the water is crystal clear it shelves very quickly to a considerable depth and consequently is also refreshingly cold, even in the hot summer months. There are waves and sometimes these can get a bit rough, creating a sandbank that you sink into to get into the water. The eastern side of the beach is less rocky than the western side. For walkers, Perissa is the starting point for hiking to the ancient ruined settlement of Thira, atop Mt. Mesa Vouna (300m), Access to the hiking path is a few kilometres west of the beach and the hike takes approximately one hour from Perissa.
