St. Mark

One of the evangelists. He is generally considered to be the young man who ran away when Christ was arrested.

St. Mark followed St. Paul and St. Barnabas on their first apostolic journey, and later followed St. Peter to Rome. He wrote down the saint's speeches (Mark 14:52) and was his interpreter.

According to a legend he established a church in Alexandria and later died as a martyr.

His body was found in the 9th century and enshrined in St. Mark's cathedral in Venice.

St. Mark is often symbolised with a winged lion and he is usually shown holding a gospel or writing, sometimes standing with a halter around his neck.
