Patmos is an island of the Aegean Sea belonging to the Dodecanese
islands. Patmos located south of Samos and north of Leros
The soil is barren, rocky and volcanic. The beaches are full of bays,
headlands and small islands that surround it. The highest peak is the
mount Prophet Elias. Together with the island of Kalymnos, Astypalea,
Leros and other smaller islands like Lipsi, Furni and Agathonisi are the
province of Kalymnos in the prefecture of Dodecanese. The island's
capital is the town of Patmos, called Chora built on a hill, where is
also the monastery of Saint John the Theologian, which resembles a
fortress. There is also a cave where John wrote the "Apocalypse".
