St. Spyridon

Cypriot shepherd who was to become bishop of Tremithos, Cyprus. During emperor
Diocletian's persecutions of the Christians, he was taken prisoner. He was
bereaved of one eye and sent to the mines.
Despite this he lived a long life, and was present at the council of Nicaea,
where he condemned the Arians. He also presided at the council of Sardicia
in 343.
St. Spyridon is often called Theophoros, "the God carrier", and
is believed to have worked many miracles.
He is the patron saint of Corfu.
